Coming Home: My Journey Back to Cambodia

Today, I want to share with you a moment that holds deep significance for me, a moment captured in the photograph, where I stand before an ancient temple in Siem Reap, my face illuminated with a sense of reverence and joy.
Returning Home
After 35 long years, I returned to my motherland, a land scarred by the memories of war but also rich with the legacy of my ancestors. The Nixon era marked a dark chapter in Cambodia's history, one that saw unimaginable suffering and loss. Yet, in the face of such adversity, I emerged with hope and resilience, embodying the strength and spirit of our people.
The photograph tells a story of coming home. Standing before the ancient temple, my expression is one of pure, unadulterated joy. It is the look of a man who has come full circle, reconnecting with his roots and the timeless heritage of our ancestors. This sacred site, with its intricate carvings and towering spires, stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of a civilization that has weathered the storms of history.
My journey back to Cambodia is more than a personal pilgrimage—it is a powerful reminder of the importance of heritage and identity. For me, and for many in the diaspora, this return is an act of reclaiming a history that is both personal and collective. It is about honoring the sacrifices of those who came before us and ensuring that their legacy lives on.
As the Achar of Nagara Dhamma Temple in San Francisco, I have dedicated my life to preserving and promoting Cambodian culture and spirituality. My leadership and wisdom have been a guiding light for the community, fostering a sense of unity and belonging. This journey back to Cambodia is a continuation of that mission, a reaffirmation of the values and traditions that define us.
